Purdue University was a school without a mascot for many years. In 1939, a Purdue student Israel Selkowitz, suggested that the school select one. After careful consideration and many suggestions the idea for the Boilermaker Special came about. This mascot was selected and would be a locomotive shell on an automobiles chassis. The locomotive design of the Boilermaker Special was thought up to celebrate the university's revered engineering program.
